Radiative Modeling Consultant – United Kingdom

The Research Department of the Physical Aspects Section of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is currently seeking a radiation modeling consultant in the field of numerical weather prediction. ECMWF’s primary objectives include the development and research of numerical methods of medium-range, monthly, and seasonal weather forecasting.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • maintain the existing shortwave and longwave radiation schemes and evaluate their performance in new model cycles
  • improve the accuracy of the representation of radiation effects at full model resolution
  • improve the representation of clouds and aerosols, as well as trace gases
  • improve the representation of surface interaction with emphasis on subgrid-scale variability
  • collaborate on developments of linearized radiation parametrization used in the data assimilation system
  • produce and maintain required documentation.

The successful candidate must possess a degree in meteorology, physics, mathematics or a related subject; a background in atmospheric physics for numerical weather prediction and experience with complex geophysical models; programming skills in FORTRAN-90 and UNIX; and excellent communication skills. A PhD, experience with IFS, and experience with coding, code testing, and code maintenance on large computers are preferred.

The working languages of ECMWF are English, French and German. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have a good knowledge of one of the other working languages.
