ARM-ASR-ESM Workshop to Help Advance Atmospheric Research Requirements

To help improve the coordination of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) atmospheric modeling and measurement programs, the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility, Atmospheric System Research (ASR) Program, and Earth System Modeling (ESM) Program are holding a joint workshop on October 21 to 22, 2015, at DOE Germantown headquarters.

The workshop will focus on improving links between ARM observations, ASR process research and modeling, and the ESM-funded Accelerated Climate Model for Energy (ACME) global climate model development project. Due to the breadth of DOE-funded research, DOE has a unique opportunity to connect atmospheric measurements and model development, utilizing a range of scales of models, toward the advancement of atmospheric research requirements.

The workshop attendees—DOE-supported investigators who represent expertise across a broad range of atmospheric observations and modeling topics—will discuss priorities and gaps in current atmospheric research and models and how best to align the parameterization development and measurement strategies to address these gaps.

The workshop results will be summarized in a meeting report and will provide material for DOE programmatic and strategic planning.
