ICRCCM Results Now Available at the ARM Data Archive
Data and documentation from the first Intercomparison of Radiation Codes in Climate Models (ICRCCM-1) are now included at the ARM Data Archive. This 1980s climate modeling project eventually led to the creation of the ARM Program. Included in this repository are all available correspondences, publications, reports, workshops and meetings, ICRCCM test cases, longwave and shortwave…

Field Campaign to Benefit from Multimillion Dollar Radar Technology
A staff scientist from CIRPAS reviews the unique capabilities provided by the phased-array radar, mounted on the truck behind the group. In March, ARM scientists visited the Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely Piloted Aircraft Studies (CIRPAS) for a first-hand look at the state-of-the-art scanning radar that will be deployed as part of the Cloud Land Surface…

Alaskan Teachers Benefit from ARM Support of International Polar Year
Last month, the ARM Education and Outreach Program sponsored two teachers from Barrow, Alaska—one of the ARM’s host communities—to attend the annual conference of the National Science Teacher’s Association (NSTA), held in St. Louis, Missouri. Imelda Cabana, from Eben Hopson Middle School, and Gary Boen, from Kiita Alternative School, were selected by the North Slope…

New, Improved Algorithm for Retrieving Liquid Water Path Now Available at the ARM Data Archive
The MWRRET product uses an improved retrieval technique and a method to identify and remove biases from the data to greatly improve the retrieved LWP (blue). It also performs so-called physical retrievals at each radiosonde launch time (black dots)—physical retrievals are the best possible retrieval that can be performed. The total amount of liquid water…

Arctic Surface Radiation Data Now Available at the ARM Data Archive
Researchers lead by principal investigator Ellsworth Dutton used more than 30 years of surface irradiance data obtained from Barrow, Alaska, in a study of temporal and spatial variations (Dutton et al. 2006). The high-temporal-resolution (1- to 3-minute averages) data and the quality-assured hourly averages are now available from the ARM Data Archive. See http://www.arm.gov/xdc/xds/noaarad for…

BAMS Features Three ARM Research Papers in February
Image of the February 2007 BAMS cover In a tropospheric trifecta, three ARM research papers were featured in the February 2007 issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, or BAMS. Two of the articles—Turner et. al., and Comstock et. al.,—cover studies of retrieval algorithms used to characterize the microphysical properties of thin liquid…

Radiosonde Temperature Sensor Benefits from Stronger Structure
The new temperature sensor (front and back shown above) for the RS92 radiosonde sports an integrated fiber-reinforced structure that improves durability while maintaining the needed measurement accuracy and response. Small sensor packages called radiosondes (or “sondes”) are used to transmit atmospheric information from weather balloons as they rise through the air. Vaisala, the supplier of…

Radiometers Operate in Low Water Vapor Conditions in Barrow, Alaska
A researcher checks the GVR antennae on a cold, crisp day at the ARM site in Barrow, Alaska. The radiometer is inside the insulated box beneath the antenna; the data is collected and displayed on the computer inside the instrument shelter. ARM file photo. To provide more accurate ground-based measurements of water vapor in extremely…

GEWEX News Features Dust Data from ARM Mobile Facility Deployment
Data from the recent deployment of the ARM Mobile Facility are featured in the February issue of GEWEX News (Vol. 17, No. 1). The February 2007 issue (Vol. 17, No. 1) of GEWEX News features early results from special observing periods of the African Monsoon Mutidisciplinary Analysis, including data obtained by the ARM Mobile Facility…

International Polar Year Draws on ARM Education and Outreach Efforts
International Polar Year (IPY) kicks off on March 1, and education and outreach efforts are an integral part of the international activities. In collaboration with several other agencies, ARM Education and Outreach staff are working to promote awareness of the IPY and climate research on the North Slope of Alaska. Many of the resources developed…
