American Geophysical Union Meeting Showcases Science and Outreach
The ARM Climate Research Facility once again took part in the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, which attracted an estimated 20,000 attendees, with 12,000 posters and 6,000 oral presentations—a growth of more than 11 percent from last year’s meeting. During the meeting, held from December 5-9 in San Francisco, nearly 500 visitors stopped by…

Aerosol Optical Depth Measurements Available as Value-Added Product
Aerosol optical depth (AOD) measures total aerosol burden in the atmosphere. The spectral dependence of AOD, typically described by the Angstrom exponent, is also an indicator of particle size. Small Angstrom exponent values (near zero) indicate presence of large particles, and vice versa. The newly developed AOD value-added product (VAP) provides both the wavelength-dependent values…

Methane Monitor Joins Surface Flux Instruments at North Slope
In October 2011, the ARM North Slope of Alaska site in Barrow welcomed a new eddy correlation (ECOR) flux measurement system and complementary surface energy balance system (SEBS), as well as a change to its baseline instrument suite: a methane gas (CH4) sensor for measurements of greenhouse gases emanating from the surrounding tundra. The addition…

New Extended Facilities Expand Flux Measurement Capabilities
Introducing: Anthony and Marshall—not new faces on the ARM Facility team, but places—locations near new “extended facilities” coming online at the ARM Southern Great Plains site in Oklahoma and Kansas. In all, eight new extended facilities have been established throughout the reduced SGP domain, now an area of approximately 22,500 square kilometers, or the approximate…

ARM Participates in DOE Booth for the WCRP Open Science Conference
In late October, the ARM Climate Research Facility attended the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Open Science conference in Denver as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s exhibit organized by the Office of Biological and Environmental Research’s Climate and Environmental Science Division. As a platinum sponsor for the conference focused on climate research in…

DOE Graduate Fellowship Program Accepting Applications for 2012
The DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship Program (DOE SCGF) is now accepting applications for 2012. The SCGF is a three-year award, providing partial tuition support, an annual stipend for living expenses, and a research allowance for full-time graduate study and thesis/dissertation research at U.S. academic institutions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, a first- or…

North Slope Students Begin Science Field Trips
In early October, operations staff at the ARM North Slope of Alaska site in Barrow hosted a tour for third-grade students from Fred Ipalook Elementary School. This tour kicks off a series of field trips coordinated by the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium outreach program. They are taking local students to various science organizations on the…

Raman Lidar Data Product Suite Provides Best-Estimate Data
Science data products derived from the Raman lidar (RL) are produced using a suite of five value-added product (VAP) processes. These VAP processes, jointly known as RLPROF, are run together to produce estimates of: water vapor mixing ratio relative humidity aerosol scattering ratio aerosol volume backscatter coefficient aerosol extinction aerosol linear depolarization ratio cloud mask…

Final Recovery Act Milestone Complete!
For the past year and a half, ARM scientists, engineers, operations, and data systems staff have been working tirelessly to support the installation and operation of nearly 150 new and upgraded instruments throughout the user facility. In September, ARM received its final three instruments – a radar wind profiler; a micropulse lidar for the Darwin,…
